When traveling to a new location, much of the planning is devoted to selecting the right hotel and activities. But what about packing the right travel accessories? Spending a little extra time on this aspect of traveling can go a long way in providing some peace of mind that one’s valuables are safe, secure, and organized.
I travel often, and frequently get asked if I ever feel unsafe. This is especially true when I travel alone, or with just my son. I have felt uneasy at some times, but I also do a lot of research to select safe destinations and lodging. This includes checking hotel reviews and star ratings, along with getting to know the surrounding neighborhoods. We can’t predict a lot of things, but we can do some work upfront to ensure a safe, secure trip.
I have heard stories from fellow travelers about unwanted people entering their rooms, or things being taken. Additionally, I have stayed at vacation rentals where the window on the ground floor didn’t lock, and it kept me up all night. These gadgets will provide some extra peace of mind on your next trip. They’re not foolproof, but they can help. `
Whether you’re getting used to a new space, securing your valuables, or protecting your family – below are some ideas that might provide some extra safety while traveling.
Travel accessories to consider packing for your next vacation
Safety gear doesn’t need to be expensive, just effective. There are many products available, and below is a narrowed-down list all under $100. These would be great to use on your next family vacation.

- Tile GPS Tracker. Make sure to use the safe in your hotel room for valuables. However, Tiles are great for helping track any misplaced or stolen items. You can use a tile for your phone, wallet, bag, etc. It’s simply an extra way to keep track of important items. You can purchase individual trackers or a set of four for less than $80.
- Doorstopper. This is an inexpensive way to provide extra peace of mind. You can purchase a basic rubber doorstopper, which will take up minimal space in your luggage and help secure a door. Amazon sells this set of 2 for under $17 and has great reviews.
- Portable Door Locks. There are some great options for additional door locks which don’t make a sound but help to provide extra support for any unwanted guests. This is easy to install in the slot of the door lock, and the door can’t open from the outside. These locks come in a set of two and are under $14.
- Door and window alarm. These travel alarms work great on doors, but where I think they provide the most value are windows. This is especially true when staying at a vacation rental where there are a lot of windows. Perfect for downstairs windows. If you want to try this product, you can practice at home before your trip. The alarm is loud, so be careful not to scare your neighbors. For less than $13, it’s a great investment. TIP: I wouldn’t recommend this for a hotel where you might have room service trying to open the door.
- Personal alarm. There are so many different personal alarms. This one is small and can fit on your keychain, attach to a bag, or be held in your hand. It’s so easy to use and provides extra security when walking at night or alone. Purchase a set of two for $33.
- Travel night light. Having a little extra light in a new space is always useful. It’s really helpful for kids as well. Being able to easily see where the bathroom is at night or having some parts illuminated if you hear a sound is reassuring. This set comes in a pack of six for under $10. Such a great deal!
- Flashlight. I always travel with a small flashlight. It’s helped me many times when I dropped something in a dark airplane and provides comfort in a hotel or vacation rental. Also, I often must take the dog outside at night, and a flashlight, or headlamp, is always with me.
- Anti-theft bag or purse. These can be incredibly handy when you’re in a crowded area and want to ensure you don’t get pickpocketed. There are backpacks, wallets, bags, and a variety of purses with different features like slash-proof, hidden zippers, and more to select from. But depending on your location, you should research which style will work best for you. The linked crossbody bag features an anti-theft pocket on the back and a zipper that locks in the main compartment.
- Carabiners. These guys are your friend. Not only do they provide you with hands-free traveling, but you can also use them when you put your bag down. For example, if you’re at a restaurant, use a carabiner to connect your bag to a table let or chair. If someone tries to take it, it will make it more difficult to just grab it and run.
Additional Travel Safety Tips
- Even when you’re not in your room, use the “do not disturb” or “room occupied” sign on the door. This will deter any unwanted visitors. Then if room service is needed, you can call when you are there, or during a time that you have scheduled.
- Take photocopies of all your travel documents. Consider emailing them to yourself or a family member or friend.
- Ensure others have a copy of your travel itinerary, hotel, etc.
- If adventuring in busy areas, consider using a bag or wallet with theft-proof features.
- Research where you are going to know where it is safe to be. Getting familiar with your surroundings is critical.
- You can use locks on your luggage to protect your belongings even when in your room.
- Always make sure someone else knows your whereabouts. I always have my iPhone location shareable with my husband. So, we can always easily locate each other.
- Pack a first aid kit. I always travel with a small kit, which has been used so many times for minor scrapes, fevers, etc. When I haven’t had a bandage, that is when I’ve always needed one.
- Make sure your phone is fully charged when out and about. And consider bringing a mobile charger.
