The tallest waterfall and highest dune in North America are within two hours of Boise. And those are only two out of the eleven day trips from Boise that your family will love this summer!

Boise is an incredible city, and there’s plenty to do if you just want to stay locally. But if you’re wanting to venture more than an hour away and explore sites in the surrounding areas — then you’re in luck. Below are eleven day trips from Boise that range from 1 – 3.5 hours each way. All offer something unique, and no matter which adventure you choose, wonderful family memories will be created.

Some of the Sites just hours from Boise

(1) Shoshone Falls (2 hours)

Often referred to as the “Niagara of the West,” Shoshone Falls is only 2 hours outside of Boise in the city of Twin Falls. At 212 feet, this incredible site is higher than Niagara Falls and a must-do activity when in the area. Additionally, in the summer this natural wonder offers recreational activities such as swimming, paddleboarding, hiking, and picnic areas to enjoy the views.

(2) Whitewater Rafting (1 hour)

After a short, and scenic 1-hour drive you can be ready to start your whitewater rafting adventure. There are two companies located close to Boise and each offer experiences ranging in thrill levels and duration. When in Idaho you should take advantage of the beautiful whitewater adventures that await! Interested in learning more? Then checkout Cascade Raft & Kayak or Bear Valley Rafting.

(3) Bruneau Sand Dunes (1.25 hours)

Bruneau Dunes State Park touts the tallest dune in North America with the highest peak reaching 470 feet. Visitors can explore the dunes by hiking, sandboarding, or sledding, and equipment is available for rent at the Visitor Center. Fishing and horseback riding are also accessible nearby. At night the Bruneau Dunes Observatory is a great place to gaze at the sky through the collection of telescopes. The heat is intense during the summer months, so make sure to visit early in the morning or evening when the sun has gone down. The dunes provide no shade — so bring your sunscreen and leave Fido at home as the sand gets too hot.

(4) Idaho City

Historic IDaho City

Founded in 1862 during the gold rush boom, Idaho City is a short drive from Boise. Step back in time to eat where miners dined, visit the “Merc,” where a pinch of gold could buy you an apple, peer through the bars of the jailhouse, and view other historical landmarks. While in Idaho City you can also enjoy the abundance of outdoor activities and beautiful mountain scenery.

The Springs in Idaho City

(5) Blue Heart Springs

Blue Heart Springs Idaho
Hagerman-Idaho
Blue-Heart-Springs

This secluded destination is only accessible by water, which makes it even more rewarding once you arrive. Visitors can paddleboard or kayak there, which takes about 40 minutes on the calm and beautiful water. The Blue Heart Springs is surrounded by towering cliffs and filled with some of the clearest water you’ve ever seen. The water’s temperature consistently remains around 58 degrees, which is perfect for a quick dip on a hot summer day. There are a couple of ways to get to the Blue Heart Springs, but a route common for families is to start and end at Banbury Hot Springs. You can learn more by clicking here.

While in the area you should also visit Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument, which is home to over 200 different fossil species of plants and animals, including the saber-toothed cat.

(6) Sun Valley (2.5 hours)

Whether you are visiting for outdoor recreation, mountain biking, delicious food, art, or shopping, Sun Valley has something for everyone. This upscale mountain town is a year-round destination, and you can learn more about the area’s family-friendly activities by clicking here.

(7) Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve (3.5 hours)

Formed by volcanic activity, this unique natural wonder got its name because it resembles the surface of the moon. Spanning over 1,000 miles this famous landmark is perfect for hiking and exploring the 500 caves (lava tubes). To learn more, click here.

(8) McCall (2.25 hours)

Ponderosa State Park
McCall Idaho

In the heart of McCall is the beautiful Payette Lake, which is surrounded by towering trees, mountains, and perfect little sandy beaches. Outdoor adventure is everywhere you look in McCall. So, whether you’re looking for hiking, boating, fishing, swimming, or mountain biking you can find it here! Ponderosa State Park is the perfect spot for a family hike and if you want great downhill mountain biking then checkout Brundage Mountain Resort. And if there are too many activities to fit into one day, then stay overnight at Shore Lodge, which offers nightly s’mores on the beach.

(9) Tamarack Resort (2.25 hours)

Summer at Tamarack

Tamarack Resort is perfect for a day trip that includes some outdoor recreation. There are many hiking trails surrounding the resort, lift-assisted mountain biking, boat rentals, and a variety of restaurants in the resort’s Village. If you’re traveling from out of town, and don’t have equipment there are rentals onsite. Additionally, if you want to get more adventurous there is a 4-hour zipline tour available — which is great for older kids.

(10) City of Rocks (3 hours)

City of rocks

Enormous granite rock formations create a beautiful landscape at the City of Rocks National Reserve. The over 14,000-acre park is known for rock climbing and hiking. Spend several hours exploring this area with your family!

(11) Warm Lake (2.5 hours)

Warm Lake is one of our favorite places to camp, but it also makes a great destination for a day trip from Boise. Warm Lake is the perfect spot for a hike, mountain bike ride, or day on the lake! If you don’t have your water toys — don’t worry, you can rent equipment at the North Shore Lodge. And while you’re there you can grab lunch, drinks, and ice cream. This is a casual location with a rustic mountain vibe that is also 100% dog friendly — so bring your pup!

When you’re done enjoying day trips from Boise and ready to stay put for a little while, you might want to check out some of the unique things to do in Boise. Happy travels!
